The Consulate provides services to Mauritanians, issues various documents and assists Mauritanian citizens in a number of ways. The Consulate deals with national passports and extends passports for up to three years. if a passport has expired, renewal is completed in Mauritania.

The consular section processes visas for non-Mauritanians who plan to travel or live in Mauritania.

If a passport is lost or stolen, the consular section can issue a Laissez-passer which will allow the holder to travel outside the United States of America.

In order to obtain a Laissez-passer, the following is needed :

  • The local police report regarding the stolen or lost passport
  • Proof of Mauritanian citizenship (birth certificate, certificate of nationality, a photocopy of a previous passport, or a copy of a previous registration form in embassy, etc)
  • Completed application form for a Laissez-passer
  • Two passport-size photos

Passport and visa applications are received in the Consular section Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

OTHER SERVICES

I-Visits in jail :
If a Mauritanian citizen is arrested, s/he should ask the autorities to notify the Mauritanian Consul who may contact family and friends on his/her behalf, and provide a list of attorneys. The Consul is not in a position to facilitate release of the Mauritanian citizen who is subject to the laws of this country.

II-Medical Assistance :
If a Mauritanian is sick or injured, s/he may contact the consular section for a list of local specialists. The Mauritanian citizen is responsible for the cost of the medical care needed. Upon request, the consular office may inform family and friends of the sick or injured citizen.

III-Arrangement in case of death :
In the event that a Mauritanian citizen should die in the area served by the Embassy of the United States, the consular section will notify the family in Mauritania and provide them options and costs for mortuary services and return of the body.
Expenses are to be paid by the family.

IV-Help in emergency
In the event that your family needs to reach you because of an emergency at home or because they are worried about your welfare, they should call the embassy at (202) 232-5700.  The Embassy will reply to the message.

Consular officers will try to locate you, pass on urgent messages, and, consistent with the privacy act, report back to your family.

In order to allow the consular section to better help and serve you, please register with the embassy as soon as you arrive in the country.
