THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

The National Anthem is taken from a poem by Baba Ould Cheikh, a Mauritanian poet and religious leader. The poem was written around the end of the nineteenth century. It was chosen as the National Anthem in 1960 when the country declared its Independence.

The Mauritanian flag

The Mauritanian flag consists of a gold crescent and a five point star on a green field. Several Muslim countries (Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey) have a crescent in their flag, while the Egyptian, Syrian and Libyan flags have a star. Most Muslim countries have either the color green, the star, or crescent on their flags or a combination of some or all of these symbols.

Color symbolism

The Green symbolic color of Islam was the color of the prophet's standard, the crescent and star are the symbol of Islam just as the cross is the symbol of Christianity.

Rules Governing the Display of the Flag

The National Flag is displayed on all government buildings.

Penal Provision for contempt of the Flag

Abusing the Flag in any way is a criminal offense and is punishable under the national law as it implies contempt of the state power. Penal provisions also govern abuse of foreign flags or national anthems of other countries.
